Backhand

A repeatable backhand for drives, rolls, and quick counters at the net.

Quick start
  • Keep the stroke compact—elbow close, paddle prepared early.
  • Use your legs and torso rotation for stability (not just arm).
  • For counters, think ‘block and guide’ with a firm wrist.
Common mistakes
  • Over-rotating and pulling balls wide.
  • Dropping the paddle head causing pop-ups.
  • Late preparation in hands battles.
Drills
backhandtwo handed backhandcounter
  • Backhand block volley to a deep target (30 reps).
  • Crosscourt backhand roll: low-to-high with a quiet wrist.
  • Backhand drive: 10 controlled reps, then 10 with more pace.
