Drops

A drop that gets you to the kitchen—reliably—so you can play the point on your terms.

Quick start
  • Use a relaxed grip and lift the ball with your legs.
  • Aim crosscourt early; go middle when the ball is fast.
  • Pick a clear landing zone (kitchen line) and repeat.
Common mistakes
  • Trying to hit the perfect drop instead of a safe, playable one.
  • Short-arming (no leg drive) which leads to dumps in the net.
  • Dropping too late while still back—move forward after contact.
Drills

  • Third-shot drop ladder: 10 reps crosscourt, then 10 middle.
  • Drop + move: hit drop, take 2 steps forward every time.
  • Pressure drill: partner volleys at you; you reset into the kitchen.
