Volleys

Block, counter, and win hands battles at the net—without popping the ball up.

Quick start
  • Paddle up in front; shorten everything in fast exchanges.
  • For blocks, use a firm wrist and let the ball come to you.
  • Counter to a big target (middle) more often than you think.
Common mistakes
  • Swinging too big at the net and losing control.
  • Open paddle face causing pop-ups.
  • Trying to counter hard from poor body position.
Drills
volleyblock volleycounter
  • Block-only drill: both players volley, no swings—just blocks.
  • Counter lane: 20 counters to the middle third of the court.
  • Speed-up recognition: only counter balls above net height.
